Essential Oil Recipes That Will Enhance Your Prescribed Gum Disease Treatment

Many essential oils such as peppermint, cinnamon, and clove, have antibacterial and anaerobic properties that help fight bacteria in the mouth and can reduce the complications of gum disease while you're being treated by a professional. Here are a couple of recipes you can use at home to help enhance your prescribed gum disease treatment:

Peppermint Berry Toothpaste

Not only will the peppermint essential oil in this toothpaste recipe help fight off bacteria in your mouth and gums, but the strawberries will also whiten and brighten your teeth thanks to the vitamin C and astringents that are found in them. This peppermint berry toothpaste is easy to make and tastes great. Here's what you'll need to make a batch:

  • 2 strawberries, fresh or frozen (if frozen, let the thaw out before using)
  • 2 tbsp baking soda
  • 1 tbsp hydrogen peroxide
  • 1 tsp lemon juice
  • 15 drops peppermint essential oil

Start by lightly mashing the strawberries in a small bowl with a fork. Then add the baking soda and lemon juice, and mix with the fork again until the concoction turns into a paste. Add the rest of the ingredients and gently stir the mixture until all the ingredients are well combined. This toothpaste will stay fresh in the fridge for about a week.

Cinnamon Spearmint Mouthwash

Cinnamon and spearmint make an excellent flavor combination that's great for rinsing in the morning or whenever you feel the need to freshen up. These essential oils will keep your mouth feeling clean throughout the day while fighting off bacteria that shouldn't be hanging around on your gums. You'll need the following ingredients to make a batch of cinnamon spearmint mouthwash:

  • 1 cup clean water
  • 4 tbsp hydrogen peroxide
  • 1 tbsp apple cider vinegar
  • 25 drops spearmint essential oil
  • 15 drops peppermint essential oil

Place all of the ingredients except the essential oils into a mason jar or similar reusable container, put the lid on, and shake the container vigorously for a few seconds, so everything has a chance to combine fully. Then take the lid off and add your essential oils. Replace the lid and gently swirl the container around in your hand until you see the oils disperse throughout the liquid. You can keep the mouthwash on your counter in the bathroom – just give it a gentle shake before each use.
